The National Unit for Disaster Risk Management (UNGRD) has just shared the most recent national report on forest fires affecting different areas of the country. The information shared is as of August 21, 2026, at 10:30 a.m.
The report indicates that there are five departments with forest fires under monitoring. However, the focus is on Tolima and Cundinamarca, where there are 12 active fires – 11 in the former and one more in the latter -.
The dozen ongoing conflagrations affect the Tolima populations of Suárez (Cerro Las Mercedes sector), Carmen de Apicalá (Bomberos Garagoa sector), Alvarado (Mesa de las Yeguas), Armero (Maracaibo hamlet), Villahermosa (on the road to Líbano), Rovira (La Reforma district), San Sebastián de Mariquita (La María hamlet), Chaparral (Tamirco and La Unión hamlets), Coyaima (Meche San Cayetano hamlet) and San Luis.
This last municipality has been the most affected where, according to the local Mayor’s report, fires have burned 20% of the territory in less than 10 days. Additionally, eight homes were consumed by the flames and another four were affected. There is also a risk to 25,000 heads of cattle.
In Cundinamarca, authorities are focused on the fire recorded in Lenguazaque, in the Chirvaneque hamlet.
The UNGRD crisis room also reported that there are 21 events under monitoring and that ten fires have already been controlled in Nariño, Magdalena, Valle del Cauca (in Tuluá) and several more in Cundinamarca.
