James Rodríguez: details of the contract offered by Italy’s Avellino and the impressive salary to convince him to go to Serie B revealed

On Tuesday morning, the bombshell broke in Europe: James Rodríguez is reportedly in advanced negotiations with Avellino of Serie B. The Italian club is pushing for the signing and would convince the player with a millionaire contract.

Little had been said about the future of James Rodríguez after the World Cup. At 35 years old and after leaving Minnesota United of the MLS, he became a free agent and no team made a strong move for him during the transfer market.

The Spanish newspaper Marca revealed last Tuesday that Avellino of Italy’s Serie B was in negotiations to sign Colombian James Rodríguez before the September FIFA international break.

The news caused a big stir in Italy and, after gathering information, Corriere dello Sport revealed the contract terms that Avellino would have offered the Cucuteño, who has the opportunity to return to Europe after his stints in Mexico and the United States.

According to the cited newspaper, talks between the Colombian and the Italian club began more than three weeks ago thanks to an intermediary, but negotiations stalled because James was not so convinced about signing for a second division team.

The left-footed player’s idea was to find a spot in a first division squad that guaranteed him playing time. Due to the lack of offers, negotiations with Avellino were reactivated and coach Alessandro Nesta began to play a key role.

The legendary Milan defender reportedly contacted James Rodríguez personally to explain the project and convince him to play in Italy’s second division. Negotiations have progressed and could close in the coming hours.

Leondino Pescatore, journalist for Corriere dello Sport, revealed that Avellino offered a contract until June 30, 2027, with an option to extend it for one more season if the southern Italian club achieves promotion to Serie A.

The salary would not be negligible, as the Cucuteño would earn 2.5 million euros if he signs the contract.

Angelo Antonio D’Agostino, president of Avellino, acknowledged in statements collected by Ottopagine that negotiations are progressing and everything could be finalized in the coming days.

“Negotiations began before Cheddira’s arrival. They were underway, then stopped, and now have resumed because it seems the player has expressed his availability, but we will have to see,” he said.

“The enthusiasm? He is an important player, and then important results have arrived. It is a good moment. Negotiations are ongoing, we will see,” he added.
